How much does your bike weigh? Do you really know? Do you care? What about those wheels, those pedals? Did you get those weight savings you paid for?
How does your bike's race setup and freeride setup compare in weight?
Before now weighing bikes and bike parts has been a tricky proposition. For years, I would go to the high end bike store in town that had one of those grocery
scales with the big needle. It's a decent scale but it looked expensive and owning one of those seemed out of reach.
As that got old, I finally broke down and bought a digital fish scale from Cabelas.com. It worked but was far from ideal since the hook was designed for fish
mouths and holding up the scale with the bike was tiring and affected the accuracy of the reading. For small parts, I had to buy a separate gram scale. It worked pretty good for small parts
but weighing bigger parts like shocks or wheels was tricky.
Isn't there a scale out there that can do this job effectively?
Enter the Feedback Sports Alpine Scale. It is a novel solution to this problem. A hollow pipe is attached to the scale with the chain and hook inside it. The pipe
is designed to be gripped by a bike stand without restricting the weighing chain. It is perfectly designed to weigh bikes and parts from a bike stand. The hook is also designed for bikes. It is
rubber coated to protect the frame finish and to prevent the bike from sliding sideways. If a bike stand is not available, the scale can be hung easily from
a cieling hook or other hardware. For small parts, a bucket can be hung on the hook and the scale re-zero'd to factor out the weight of the bucket.
Construction:
Construction is top notch. The unit is quite heavy for its size and has a very solid feel. The case is made out shock-absorbing rubber to endure the abuses
of the typical bike workshop.
Accuracy:
The unit seems very, very accurate for a 50 lb. scale. It can display the weight in lbs and grams.
Measurements of a complete bike were identical no matter how many times we put them up on the scale.
I measured a Fox fork using my super accurate gram scale. The reading was 3 lbs 9 ounces. I put it on the Feedback sports scale and the reading was 3 lbs 9 ounces.
