Probably doesn't need the front suspension, would chose something lighter if up to me....however, it is the kid's favorite part. | | Bottom Line: | This bike had exactly the features I was looking for, like the 1X6 drivetrain, not too complicated for kids. The other bike that I was considering was by Raleigh "Rowdy" looks pretty good too. If you are considering the Kona, keep in mind that they can be hard to come by..mine took about 6 weeks to get in. He finds the lowest gears are a little tall, we have undulating terrain and some of the steeper inclines require lower gears than fitted in factory spec.
Its a great size and weight for a lean 7 year boy of average height, he should get 2 years riding before needing a larger bike, the lowest seat height would of allowed him to ride this bike a year ago (age 6). I looked at all of them & its the lightest I found. The old school stem is better that a threadless b/c you can raise and lower the bar height w/o buying a new stem or bar.
