I see some posts for Disc brakes, I think thats another board. Anyway. My friend has a Wal-Mart bike and he has less problems with his brakes. I love everything about the bike except the brakes. Everytime I take the wheels off, the brakes have to be readjusted. Just when I think I have them set perfectly, I go out riding and within a few miles, they are rubbing again. Brought the bike to the LBS to have them adjusted, it cost me $16. As soon as I got out on the road, they started rubbing again. For $50 I'm gonna pick up a set of AVID SD 7's and be rid of them. 1 chili for value, because I'm sure Cannondale could have put better brakes on for very little addition cost to them or me. I would actually have preferred to pay an extra $10 if it meant decent brakes. 2 chili's overall, because they are not a danger to ride with. They do stop the bike, I just find them very annoying because they constantly have to be adjusted. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I used them all summer and found that they were not powerful enough (I weigh 185lbs). I have since switched to the new sintered metal pad kit (with standoff tube) with great success. I was guaranteed by tech support at Cannondale (1-800-BIKEUSA) that these would do it for me and so far, I think they’re right. For those of you who are complaining about lack of braking power, I suggest that you call tech support and maybe if enough of us complain, they might recall the old ones... unfortunately, I had to pay for mine.
As for my complaint about the levers being too close to the bars... the levers can easily be modified. E-mail me for instructions.
And for those of you who are complaining about leaking... I have not had a problem with the Expert but I do know that Cannondale has discontinued the Competition brake due to this.
Overall, I like the brakes. Would I buy them seperately to install on my bike... probably not. But would I buy another Cannondale with the same brakes... For sure! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Good on steeps at slow speed. Haven't tried them at steeps at high speed yet but I have confidence in them. At first I was concerned about the power because they lack the grabbiness that v brakes have at slow speeds, but anyone who has ridden steeps with their hands full of V brakes knows how the power dramatically fades off as they get hot. These don't do that. I will never ride V brakes again. Those who want more consistent braking power, and or those who like the feel of wheels with really low rotational inertia would be wise to consider these. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Funny thing happened, snapped my rear axel forcing me to switch back to a rim brake on the rear. I hate having two different brake levers so jumped at a buddies offer to let me use his Hayes Mechanical on my Lefty until I got my rear wheel back.
That Hayes Mechanical completely altered my thoughts on the Coda Expert brakes.
Codas: Good modulation Light weight Stop only slightly better than a good V Unbelievable ambient temperature issue (yes the damn things have been bled). $240 US per wheel
Hayes Mechanical: Good modulation Heavier (but not much) Stop almost as good as the Hayes hydraulic $120 US per wheel
I considered the 2001 upgrade mentioned below, but balked at the "not for downhill use or when extended brakeing is required" My favorite trail is 30 minutes of near constant braking. Also would not resolve the ambient temperature issue.
I've also used the Avid mechanicals, they stop a little better than the Hayes, but have poor modulation.
Bottom line - If you own a Cannondale and can use non-Coda hubs then definately look at the Hayes or Avid mechanical brakes. They stop better than the Codas, cost half as much, and are much more reliable (read, duck tape will fix your cables in a pinch). If you own the Lefty you are SOL when it comes to the Avids, get the Hayes. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Very temperature sensitive. I'm not talking about the rotors heating up, I'm talking about starting out at 7am in the low 60s (F) with mushy brakes and then at 10am in the high 70s the brakes work great.
The culprit is the closed system. If I had it to do over again I would get the Magura Louise instead (now that they have a Coda rotor).
Price? high. Performance Bike is selling Shimano's new disk for $150 each, the Magura Louise for $170. $200+ for these brakes is pricy. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

Attractive and if kept clean, very powerful. If you buying aftermarket they're unbelieveable value if bought with coda hubs. | | Weaknesses: | Incredibly intolerant of contamination. Any form of dirt/dust or grime on pad or rotor reduces the brake to powerless squealing nightmare. Uncomfortable brake lever. had many modifications through the first 6 months before they worked reliably. | | Similar Products Used: | Coda Competition brake. Just as good looking but not quite as light. Extra adjustment at lever in super user friendly and had no problem with loss of power. | | Bike Setup: | Cannondale Raven 1000disc, Raven900sx and most recently a Jekyll 200sl. | | Bottom Line: | The bottom line with Expert is that if you're buying today all early quality issues are sorted. The brake is still very intolerant of contamination on the rotor or pad. Keep them clean and they work really well. Not the super lock up of Hayes or Magura but then you don't want that downhill at 30mph. Great feel from an uncomfortable lever, you can tell exactly when it's going lock and that's a good thing.

I'm a shop mech, in a very large shop and we deal with alot of cannondales w/ disc brakes, i can't stress this any more when you set up the coda expert disc's (not the comps) you must set the non- piston side up so that it just starts to drag and then set up the piston side so that it almost drags, and then ride them lightly on a short ride to bed in the pads, look carefully at the rotor is it like an un-true wheel, look at it after the break in ride. it will be straight as an arrow, then re-ajust the non-piston side that it just starts to drag again, this may take a few rides, but they will stop and danm good to, don't think you know everything and set them up so them don't drag they have to at first to bed pads. DON'T USE ANY BRAKE CLEANER OR DEGREASER TO CLEAN THE ROTORS!!!!. if they need to be cleaned, wich they probably don't,use dawn in hot water or alcohol. IF THE PADS GET OIL ON THEM FROM BLEEDING SEND THEM SWIMING WITH THE FISHES. always remove the pads before bleeding. Now if you are still have trouble, take them to an expert, or a shop that sells cannondale, most shops that don't carry cannondale, hate cannondale's, Because they don't understand good inovation. I'm not saying that cannondale brakes are the best, all i'm saying that they work very good, an anyone who is having problems with these brake are not taking the time to set them up right. peace, i will give them a 4, no one should get a 5. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
