$20.00 | | Purchased At: | Halfords,I think | | Strengths: | Strong, easy to set up, works with all 3 of my front chain rings. Stops chain jumping off. Pretty quiet. Used for over 10 years on various bikes with no problems. | | Weaknesses: | Doesn't work with elevated chain stays. Early ones were noisy but the problem was solved with a different roller being used by manufacturer in newer models. | | Similar Products Used: | Bullet Bros, MRP | | Bike Setup: | GT Karakoram, RST Mozo Pro's 4.5, Mavic D521 Fr+Rr, Raceface stem, Qranc DH bars, DX V's, Rockshox suspension seatpin, other stuff!!!! | | Bottom Line: | Works well with a single ring as well as a triple ring set up. I used it with an MRP, just to make sure, on another bike set up for DH and the chain never threw once. Also used on a XC set up. Again, no chain throwing off. If you ride and get fed up with your chain bouncing off, get one of these. Simple to set up and not very noisy, just a quiet rumble, especially now as the roller is a softer compound rubber unlike the rock hard orginal DCD's. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

I was on a two week trip in the south (dirt, gravel roads) and my shifting was also getting progressively worse. Finally took the thing off as per a friend and guess what? No more shifting problems. My drivetrain is silk now. Thank god I got rid of it. I'm not exactly sure what the problem is, but it doesn't seem to work well thru the whole gear range (particularly at the extremes) and basically results in a war between your rear derailler and the tensioner. Disappointing and not recommended. | Overall Rating: |

If your looking for a chain tensioner do not buy this. I got one a long time ago, it woked good for the time I had it on my GT. Then when I got my Zaskar it would not go on. So I went to my LBS to get another one, this one was the silent roller kind. So he put it on and it worked until the roller wore out in only a few months! I could not belive it. Then I got an MRP cross speed 1 that broke in only a few weeks, took the roller off that one, drilled out the DCD and put it on. All right for about the first 90 days then the shifting kept getting worse until it just plain sucked. So I took it off, and all of a sudden my shifting was 100%. The problem is that the roller is not wide enough to cover all of the gears. I now use an AC chain guide with one chain ring which is ten times better than this one. So if you put one on, sonner or latter its going screw your shifting all up. Two chilies for its short lasting roller, and screwing the shifting all up. | Overall Rating: |

I've found the to be the best proforming chian tensioner out there. My buddy bought the kore one and had nothing but problems. I saw some messages where a guy said the kore tensioner works great if you tighten it down right and then put a little locktite on it, but im the type of person that would rather just bolt the thing in place and not have to worry about if I hit the tensioner against something that it wont function properley. The DCD chain tensioner takes all of about 2 min. to install (maybe a little longer for a swiss fit) and only a really hard blow stands a chance of affecting its working order. As for the roller, try putting fresh lube on it before each ride and clean it from time to time, that way wear should be minamal | Overall Rating: |

BAD BAD BAD BAD!! The only positive thing about it is that I am now able to stand a lot more crap than before. It made me immune to bad components. First of all, it's noisy like a raped pig on speed. Secondly, the chain digs itself into the rubber, buggering up the chainline, hence poor shifting... Finally, when you think they take the piss and want to take the crap off, the aluminium-bolts decide to get soft, so your allen-key won't get any grip, making it impossible to take them off with anything else than a lot of dynamite. | Overall Rating: |

I bought the DCD chain tensioner about aweek ago, Its cool like people say it is, It stops chain slapping like people say it does, but hell does it make alot of noise, it makes my bike sound like one of those childrens Big Wheel, the noise is a rubbing ,rough loud noise like its putting to much pressure on your chain, which I think it does, because peddling becomes more difficult and harder and the wheel on the tensioner is kind of small, which causes shifting problems and the chain to hit the side of the metal, so I returned it and got my self The Excecutioner Chain Tensioner, which to be honest I have the slightest idea who makes it (Bought it, at International Bike Shop in Brighton, MA) and this one works fine, it makes noise as well, but not loud, you can actualy hear the noise of the chain going through your chainrings more and the wheel is slightly bigger which does not make shifting a problem or peddling difficult and it fits without adjustments. | Overall Rating: |

No good at all! I was suffering clanging noises at speed from my chain hitting my titanium frame (unpainted so it makes a load of noise!), and this was my first attempt at quietening it down. How wrong I was! After problems with chain alignment and bending it to fit my frame, I was then subjected to an unacceptably loud noise everywhere I went! I ride in quiet countryside to avoid this kind of noise - there is no point having a good quality, well maintained bike if it sounds like some old rust-bucket! I then chose one of the tensioners that holds the rear deraileur back with a spring, and finished it all off with a lizard skin - a vast improvement! One of you who wanted to know where to buy a DCD (why, having read these reviews?) can have mine to save it from its final ride - into the bin! | Overall Rating: |

First off I'd like to say that I bought the silent version of this tensioner. The only thing different is that instead of a plastic roller this one has a rubber roller, which makes it less silent. It still makes noice but I don't know of a chain tensioner that doesn't for less than $50. Still a little noicy but it gets the job done of tensioning the chain. Plus, it looks cool. It's adjustable to fit all chain stays and comes in 2 different colors. A problem that I have found is that the chain has a tendency to move to the right of the roller therefore rubbing against side of the metal. All ya gotta do is push the whole thing to the right and it quickly makes the problem go away. It only costs $33 which I'd have to say is pretty reasonable. Then little bit of noise left will probably go away of they make the rubber softer. | Overall Rating: |

When I got my new bike, I noticed the chain clattered around a lot, so I bought one of these and a lizard skins chainstay protector. Since DCD bulges out towards the wheel, I couldn't put it out of the way of the chainstay protector, so I had to put it underneath. It was a nightmare to set up, and fell to bits at the slightest mistake, and it had a very dodgy feel when I tightened it, as if it could never be tightened enough. After it was installed, is made no noticable difference other than to pull in the rear derraileur. After reading some of these reviews, and thinking to myself that it might have caused the broken teeth in my chainrings, I took it off, only to find that it had crumpled the plastic chainstay covering where it had been. Although this works I'm sure that there are better products on the market to do the job. Its damn noisy and I had problems getting it onto my frame (Oversized Aluminium). A bit of forcing and a pair of pliers done the job.
Another problem that I had was that is started to move into the spokes (could be fatel if you don't notice in time. I think this has been stopped on the DCD 2 though. | Overall Rating: |

Bought it to stop my chain skipping, sucking and slopping around. Yeah, it works fine, though you get a fair bit of noise off it as the chain passes over the plastic. You can stop this by putting a bit of old inner tube around the roller, to a degree. But the tube will wear through and need replacing often. The roller also wears leaving a whole load of grooves in it and skewing the chain transport - unless you're really hyper about lubing it every ride. Expect it to stick big time after every couple of mud rides.
About a year ago I took it off, since it was interfering with the smoothness of my shifting. I haven't been able to tell the difference since I haven't had it on - ie I'm not having more chain problems. Verdict has to be, that it's a largely unecessary product. Better to just keep in a high gear going downhill.
ps anyone want one?

The ad claims Eliminate chain suck and chain jump and fits all chainstays. Bull****! First it took two pairs of pliers to bend it to fit my Cannondale Delta V 1000, which chipped all the paint of of the tensioner. As for chain suck, my chain sucked like a trailer park chick on prom night. The only positive thing is that it did stop some chain slap, which could have been accomplished by removing a couple of chain links. Performance sells this product for $21.99, I will sell mine for a low, low price of $1.99.

This wiget (tm) I picked up because I've had some fun with chain slap on the bike. The chain bounced, bucked, and wanted to dislodge itself from hard braking to the local choppy trail. The DCD worked like it was supposed to. The chain is now kept under control and has almost no desire to be anywhere, but on the cogs. It has made pedaling more difficult, and louder, (as the chain rubs on the tensioner) but does its desired job effectively and cheaply. For $20 (USA) it was a good buy. If cost was no object it would lose a star. (I'd get a floater like the pulleys or the Kore...)
