$20.00 | | Purchased At: | Spicer Cycles | | Strengths: | The STS has fewer moving parts than most other tensioners. Most other ones use springs to provide upward or downward tension on the chain, and most such attempts fail. The springs usually lack adjustability, and improper tension may cause the chain to skip over the rear cog during high torque. Also, the STS uses a roller instead of a pulley. This is smoother and quieter than the pulleyed tensioners that I have tried. Also, the pulley has plenty of room to play on its axis, so a variety of chainlines/rear cog positions can be accomodated. The STS can push the chain up, resulting in more chain wrapped around the rear cog, which prevents skipping. Most other tensioners work in this mode as well, though I have run across ones that don't. | | Weaknesses: | I suspect the rollers may wear out faster than a pulley, and may be harder to replace, but at $20 for the whole tensioner, one can buy two or three of these for the cost of inferior spring and pulleyed tensioners. | | Similar Products Used: | DMR tension seeker (made by the same folks, more expensive, and inferior). Generic tensioner sold by misfitpsychels. | | Bike Setup: | Nashbar 853 frame, kona P2 forks, flat handlebars, single speed. | | Bottom Line: | This product is simple, functional, robust, and economical. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$40.00 | | Strengths: | looks awesome and does the job of keeping the chain well tensioned. good quality metal and the roller is smooth | | Weaknesses: | the bolt which attaches it to the rear mech hanger is made of on of the weakest metals i've seen, so you have to be really careful when tightning the bolt to push the allen key in the whole way | | Bike Setup: | gt chucker 2.0 | | Bottom Line: | worth it - less hassle then gears, as i kept on braking them doing 5 ft drops, but maybe a bit expensive | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |
