Favorite Trail:Bromont
Duration Product Used:More than 3 years
Price Paid: $899.00
Purchased At:La Porte a Bicyclette
Strengths:Ultimate performance only if tuned by YR, from www.velocycle.com
Weaknesses:Stanchions wears out in three months because of not well designed wiper seals.
Similar Products Used:Boxxer, 888
Bike Setup:giant Glory
Bottom Line:My original fork was worned out pretty fast just with normal DH riding. Why?, because Fox seals are not well designed. They permit the crud to enter the fork too easily, making the stanchions to wear prematurely.

I bought another fork, & YR from www.velocycle.com applied the YR's efficiency upgrades to it. Now its been three years I'm riding the same fork without any maintenance! YR made my fork to work like its supposed to, not like those 6 digit crooks from Fox! I made a basic oil change recently to discover that I did not need any, oil being perfectly clean... YR's efficiency upgrades made so much of a difference to the 40, I am knocked out! & it only cost me 100 ca$ for more than 500 usd worth of aftersale maintenance recommended from the owner's manual... Value rating is for Fox usa. Overall rating is because of YR's rebuild on my fork!

Strengths:very active, maintains momentum very well, allows you to plow through rocks whilst still providing heaps of grip, structuraly the fork is very stiff, good at high speeds.
Weaknesses:Noisy! spring cluncks around inside, not very progressive, will bottom out on moderate size flat landings.
Similar Products Used:06 Boxxer teams
Bike Setup:07 Giant Glory
Bottom Line:When working well this fork is incredible. It will track the ground so well that I find I forget that it is there and can just concentrate on riding. To appreciate this fork you need to have a good ride on it as it feels preety ordinary when you give it a quick push up and down.
Unfortunately I cant say it is twice as good as my Boxxers though they cost twice the money.
Buy this fork if you want a great DH fork, freeriders need not apply.

Strengths:Gee, where do I begin? tons of adjustability, rediculously plush, has that traditional fox shox feel to it, eats up everything! Oh, and their integrated brake mount takes a 6 inch international standard brake mount that fits most XC forks.. nothing special.. in fact its cheaper then most 20mm brake adapters.
Weaknesses:due to the raging lust for fox forks, its very expensive.. even after being made two years ago! Still, its definately worth the money though. More of a race Dh fork then a freeride fork.
Similar Products Used:Marzocchi shiver, 888, Boxxer, bla bla bla.
Bike Setup:Haro 357, fox 40, manitou metal RPA, azonic, FSA, race face, bla bla bla...
Bottom Line:
Not a bad fork at all! I wouldn't call it a giant hurl above the current crop of DH forks, but I can see why its argumentetively the best fork ( on the curcuit) I was a little hesitant to run it through and go all out do to how expencive it is. but eventually I did, and its taken everything I've thrown at it, made me a faster rider, and (at least on the track or trails) made me more confident! The stock ti spring is way too soft in it.. they need to swap the spring rate to a firmer spring for their 07 and 08 forks. I really like the low speed feature on this fork.. tramendous gains in pedal sprinting as well as proper compression due to hard braking.,.. hardly ever use the high speed.. just have is set at factory.

HOWEVER!!! If your a pure adrenaline junky with little regard for your life and have a low budget, go with the Marzocchi 888's. I would believe them to be a little bit stronger, and it won't brake your bank if you for some odd reason thrash it beyond ridable capability (i.e. crash into a tree/ bolder, fall off the side of a mountain, etc..

Weaknesses:Bottom Stanchons
Similar Products Used:888s
Bike Setup:Enduro DHX5, Race face bars/stem, V12s,
Bottom Line:Took a little time to dial in and understand fully, but when they are dialed, staggering is the word. takes huge pounding whilst still giving huge feed back on terain, almost to the point they're tiring to ride at first till you get used to it. I am very glad I got them and wouldn't change my descision, but if you like to ride through stuff without feeling everything and with a little give these aren't the forks for you. But if you want masses of feedback through the bars, you can't do better. For me they are perfect, but don't get caught up buying them for show, coz I reckon you'll regret it as a friend of mine has.

Strengths:Super light weight for their size, fantastic confidence inspiring performance, Razor sharp steering precision, reliability, THEY MAKE YOU A BETTER RIDER!!
Weaknesses:The soft and medium springs provided are way too soft. Perhaps not as strong as they look. They take while to set up correctly..
Similar Products Used:Nothing comes close.
Bike Setup:Mr. Big custom frame, Fox DHX 5.0 ti, Hayes, FSA Pounders, Atomlab, Mavic, Hadley, Shimano, all quality gear..
Bottom Line:It took a long time for Fox to finally get around to building a downhill fork, but it was well worth the wait. These things ooze quality. It can take a while to get them set up just right (due to the massive range of adjustment.), but once set, they are unbelievable! They will encourage you into doing things that you never thought possible, and they'll find grip where they have no right to do so. They are expensive to buy, but they are worth every penny and I believe for what they offer, they are actually a bargain. I have raced, used and abused these for over 18 months throught the best and worst that the Alps, Scotland and Whistler could throw at them and apart from switching to a harder spring and the long initial set up, they are as they left the box. They will hammer though the maddest terrain with precision but that said, they will reward riders who use a little finese with a riding experience that is unparalleled espescially when used with a DHX. Ride them and you'll know what I mean.. They make you ride better, what more could you ask for.

Weaknesses:Very complex fork, only one Titanium spring provided out of the 3!

Bottom Line:I'm sorry but the two negative reveiws above, either have no idea how to set up a profesional product such as this or simply don't own them. Yes they will dive through their travel if you set no compresion daming, it clearly states that in the manual!!!

This fork is AMAZING. They take a long time to tune to your riding style and demand to be riden fast to be appreciated but that's what they are designed for as most forks on the market at present work fine up to 20mph, it's when you start pushing them is when you begin to notice their draw backs. I stand by this statement that no other fork available on the market at this time will come close to the ability of this fork. The construction is higher than any fork I've ever seen in the MTB world, the closest being some Ohlins on a GP bike!!! The stiffness is instantly noticable and this reflects on the steering ablility of the fork. Through fast rock gardens, braking bumps and gnarly of cambers the Fox 40 makes it feel effortless. It's awesome damping properties and adjustablities makes this fork out perform anything on the market and owning some will feel like cheating.

The only problem with the 40rc2's is that they are too pro' for the average Joe as setting the damping curve to match the compression curve is a science in it's self. I fear many riders will spend the extra to own a set of RC2's to say they bought the top of the shop forks and to look more pro at their local spot only to have them set up incorrectly and thus not benefit from their true potential. Therefore if you feel you are not that technically minded or don't know a suspension mechanic, i strongly sugest you save some cash and get the 40r's instead. The RC2's are not a Fork you can simply stick on a bike and think you are going to be fast, you do have to set them up properly in order for them to perform for you.

Bottom line, I'm faster as a result. FOX RULE!!!!!!!!!

Duration Product Used:3 months
Purchased At:rocky cycle
Strengths:Good geometry (doesn't push the front end of the bike up so much like the 888), progressive feel, fork feels like it will eat up anything you can through at it.
Weaknesses:Stock springs are garbage if you weigh close to two bills, fork cost more than my first two vehicles, aftermarket springs (steel) will push the weight of the fork closer to a 888, fox service centre is in Calgary (if you live in Canada), some adjustmentment on the fork can only be done at the service center.
Similar Products Used:2002 Monster T, shiver, 888, etc
Bike Setup:SC VP Free (Fox DHX 5.0)
Bottom Line:When I first rode this fork I was very disappointed with it. It was so soft that I was blowing through almost the all 8 inches riding at moderate speeds. Obviously not confidence inspiring. However, once I put a heavier spring it made a world of difference. This is the fastest fork I've ever ridden (never ridden a dorado but not really to fond of inverted forks). Still curious about the durability though. Give it 4 chili's for overall (I am sure someone will top this fork at some point) and 3 for value because if your paying for this one yourself it hurts.

Bottom Line:Through moderate terrain or even hitting reasonable rock gardens at speed this fork makes my old Super T look like a crude peice of history. However, when things get big and hairy the Super T (I so carefully tuned to my liking) delivers the goods while the Fox bottoms incessantly. I weight 165 lbs and with the stock spring this fork bottoms out on every run. Turning from full off to full on the compression damping does so little I'm considering sending the fork in Fox to be checked out. I'm switching to the next stiffer spring and am going to call Fox and find out if adding more oil or switching to higher weight oil will make the fork suitably progressive.

Strengths:Almost everything. Super smooth, long, buttery travel even befor break in. Tons of suspension. Really light!
Weaknesses:Just that the stock spring is a little soft for me, but thats just personal.
Similar Products Used:Dorado and 888r, but that doesn't mean their nierly as good.
Bike Setup:Cortina DH Extreme 8, XTR, Fox 40RC2, Manitou Bazooka rear shock (oh yeah!), Hayes brakes.
Bottom Line:If you have money and like spending it, look no further. This fork is unbeatable. The suspension is more supple than a Dorado, with an inch more, and has less sticktion than a 888. Look at the results of riders using this fork: Kyle Strait won Rampage, and Duncan Riffle beat out other big names to win the Nation Championships. That has to say something about the product. Plus it looks sick. I've always loved the big beefy look of the Marz. Monster T, but hated the weight. The Fox was my answere. Lightest, plushest, most travel, overall BEST DOWNHILL FORK YOU CAN BUY. Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Strengths:This is an update to my previous review below
Weaknesses:The front axle came apart on me when I was trying to remove my front wheel. The axle is made of two parts, a hollow axle and a threaded end cap. These are bonded together at the factory using some thread locking compound. I followed all the torque specs, but the end cap came unscrewed. Pete at Fox warranty was helpful and responsive and suggested using red loctite to bond them together again. This worked, but beware of Fox's cheap axle design.

The rubber bumpers to protect the frame and stanchions slide around alot, especially in the wet.
Similar Products Used:See review below
Bike Setup:See review below
Bottom Line:Lube your axle threads before installing--Fox said this was OK.

Fox should have either made the axle one piece, used a spline and press fit the two parts together, or even reverse threaded the axle end cap. Their design leaves a lot to be desired, expecially in a top of the line product such as this.

I was lucky that I wasn't on the trail with a flat tire when this happened.

Value rating stays at 4, overall rating drops to 4 until Fox comes up with a better solution.

Otherwise the fork has been performing great.

Date Reviewed: February 7, 2005
Duration Product Used:Less than 1 month
Price Paid: $1550.00
Purchased At:LBS
Strengths:Very stiff, very plush, low weight, axle simplicity, steel inserts for axle pinch bolts (so holes wont strip out like a Boxxer), brake hose guide, low axle to crown height, adjustability, craftsmanship.

Gives you confidence to do things you probably shouldn't.

Girls you've never met before come up and say "Wow, that thing is huge!"
Weaknesses:EXPENSIVE.

Gives you confidence to do things you probably shouldn't.

Fox cheaped out and should have included the crush washers that are necessary to swap the included springs or change travel.

No integrated fender mount.

Lower tubes are so big, a bike computer magnetic pickup won't fit easily--must be attached to the brake hose instead.
