Now we are in 2005, the Manitou Mars has evolved into the Skareb (http://www.answerproducts.com/, then use Search). This forum has been extant since 2000, and in the meantime, riders are going bigger and forks are getting longer travel. Answer still stands out, though, as a manufacturer who stand out in customer support. When you wear out the bushings in your shock or fork, just call the support line to get an RMA. You'll see your shock or fork inside of a week, and they will have made it like new.
Now that Rockshox is owned by SRAM, I would hope they would do as well, but I would not know: we run only Manitou here. (The Minute with SPV is a wonderful ride.)

I never had a Rockshox, but have a z2xfly, Mars and other Maitou shox. Mars is spongy and unreliable, break easy and don't respond to air pressure (ALL Manitou Shocks Suck!). The Bomber is the best shock I've ever had, very smooth, reliable sturdy and adjustable. Bomber has nice wide stance as well for control. I'll never get another Manitou again (They Suck!). Marzocchi or I'll try FOX.
WINNER: z2fly
The Mars CL was rigged enough to trail ride and light enough to race. Setup was snappy, maintenance a breeze. Although it leaked oil past the lock-out knob continously and I was forced to replenish it on a regular basis this was a great fork. You can't beat the reliability of the SID or its plush ride. The SID is a great race fork but I stayed with the Mars at the time.

Some of these reviews on here are hilarious. One guy was talking about how great RST is...another guy Cannondale Lefty..pure crap. In the last few years I've had bikes with a '99 sid-dual air, '00 Manitou sxr, a Cannondale headshok fatty ultra and a C'dale lefty. If you like plush and super damped, the Manitou is nice, but the bushings got pretty used up. The fatty and the sid are very light, and nice race shocks. the difference in torsional stiffness is amazing though. Torsionally the fatty is like a rigid fork. The lefty has got it all though. great damping adjustablity, sid-like weight, the torsional stiffness of a rigid fork, and the best lockout, bar none (I use the manual twist). Both it and the fatty have a bit of a harsh top-out, though I only seem to notice this while climbing without the lockout. Cannondale Lefty.

Everyone can take their cheap-ass, plastic internal, wanna-be shocks and put them where the sun doesn't shine! I've tried most of them in an attempt to find a shock that will last more than one race season and 20,000km per year (yes that is the distance I train). Only ONE company has delivered: PACE out of England! The carbon legs are beautiful, the internals are (get this) machined aluminum and NOT plastic, and they've been using a lock out lever way before Rock shox even figured out what dampening was. Pace is to "shocks" as Chris King is to "headsets". (PERIOD)

Honestly, I ca't find the difference of the bounce of all these forks. Maybe some of features on the brochures are for commercial purposes only. I have tried almost all the brand of forks but find really no big difference on each other except for the design and travel. If you shop wise, buy an RST regardless of models. Its cheaper and has the same features.

All of these forks are discontinued models. Lets see an updated comparison . Fox Forx with shimed damping design has put all of these forks in the ditch. PSYLO Race 2001 or 2002 models only. These forks rock. They are exactly the same as a SID Race but fatter tubes. Lockout, dual air, 80mm, 100mm or 125mm adjustment and only 3.5 lbs. I used to ride a SID Team and it was so flimsy I put on the 2001 psylo race at 100mm and will never go back to the rubber band sid.
WINNER: other
I honestly can't speak for the others - but my SID shock is everything I've ever wanted in a XC fork. If you ride XC this would deffinitly be my top suggestion. The dual air adjustability even for rebound is awesome and I especially like the lockout function. If you're a DH rider maybe its not for you but if you like climbing mountains as much as screaming down them and riding long distance - its SID all the way.

I mostly xc, but I also downhill/freeride. Ive tried products from all these manufactures except for white bros. The sid and the mars are a little to wimpy for my style. Even when Im on my xc bike I like a fork that can handle some abuse. Everyone Ive known that has white bros end up blowing them constantly. I have never experienced a problem with any marzocchi product ive ridden, and they feel great. I definitly have to go with the xfly. Its big, its bad and its still light enough to xc race on.
WINNER: z2fly
Nothing can beat the feeling of dual air on a sid a true fully adjustable ride. You will definetly notice your ride on the trails.

Fox Floats is by far the best all around shock out there. I had a Manitou sx 100mm and i was always flying over the handle bars doing down hill really fast on rocky soft ground. The Manitou has abit of flex to it because the wheel truns side ways. Since i buy my Fox Float RLC 6 months ago I have not gone over the handlebars on that shock, Because it is so much stiffer fox buts 32mm bars for stable and the shock looks bigger then other shocks that are 30mm bar. The stable with 32mm bar is a big different but that why you pay $550 for a shock. The shock also smooth on big and little hits it beats a sid and for as far as weigth Fox@ 3.62lbs of 100mm Super stiff, and stiff, plus maintenance is great ever 25 hour of riding tune up the shock and sid@2.8lbs and 80mm not very stiff and high maintenance and there are the same price about.

Marzocchi, hassle free, tough, reliable, easy to fiddle with
WINNER: z2fly
Forks I currently own are sid sl, sid race, manitou sx-r, marz marathon, and white bros xc4. Stiffness is a no brainer, wb xc4 takes it. Plushness, again wb xc4 but it is close with the marathon. Weight would go to the sid race. However, the sid sl rides better. Weight really isn't an issue here because they are all very light. Without babbling on, White Bros XC4 is the winner.
WINNER: xc4
I wanted a White Bros but couldn't find a place that sells it, let alone parts later on when it needs new seals/etc. So its now an X-Fly on my rig. SID?...sure its light...so is cardboard, and thats about the strength.

Manitou XC forks don't seem to hold up, their downhill stuff is all right though. The winner for trouble-free riding would have to be Marzocchi, for Racing it would be a Sid.

WINNER: z2fly
The only shock I would even consider of the bunch is the Marzocchi. I would only use it on a lightweight crosscountry racer(either hardtail or full suspension). For all other types of Trail bikes,Freeride,Downhill I would not go air at all, and get a Marzocchi Atom race or MCR or Triple crown Coil/Oil.....

since i am such a beast (as u have heard about in some of my trail reviews) i can choose none other than the marzocchi. i rode a sid race once and cracked the sanction tube down the front. (not really, but they are verty noodly) they also require a lot of maintinence to run well and sometimes flex under hard braking with disks. i just don';t understand weight wienies, i can clean hall ranch in lyons colorado in my middle chanring no matter if i'm riding a 35lb freeride bike or a 20lb xc bike. i would definately chose the Z2 on this one, it is the beastly choice. --------BEAST

Because all these forks work well for their own design, the next important feature would be weight.
We all know the lightest fork here is the Sid. (If you spent all your time and money keeping your bike light, go with these for sure).
If you don't really care about grams, go for performance.
In my opinion, Manitou makes the best race-intended fork, hands down.
White Brothers would closely follow with their near flawless design.
Then, of course, Marzocchi for the travel, weight is however sacraficed. For longer travel, these rock. And they look good on any bike. There are many great forks from these companies to fit anyones budget.
For downhill racing, new Manitou inverted.
For downhill/freeride, Marzocchi shiver or Monster T.
For drops bigger than ever, S8, bigfoot or Avalanche. Oh yeah!

ps re: specd on more bikes if it was better product.
Bullsh*t! There are more plastic 1/2" pedals and unsealed 1" threaded headsets spec'd on bikes worldwide than spds and ritchey logic 1 1/8. Does that make them a better product
WINNER: xc4
rockshoks has my vote fro dependability. Marzochi is known for there long travel smoothness not there light race forks. White is just to small a competitor.(if it really was good, it would be spec'd on more bikes) and manitou i've never gotten to know. I don't know there line up or there features.

The only logical choice here is the Marzocchi. It feels the best, rides the best, and looks the best. The stanchions are bigger than the Sid, it's cheaper to maintain than the White, and the seals won't blow like the ones on the Mars. For all you who complain about weight, pee before the ride and you just dropped that extra weight. I have ridden every fork on the market (I work at a shop) and the Marzocchi is hansd-down the best fork produced.

SID RACE, there is no question that in the world of XC racing that i would want a SID on my bike. I race both DH and XC and i love what the guys at ROCK SHOX have done with their air forks. IT is super light!!!!!! and it is reasonably stiff, i only reccomend a sid if u are less that 170, it will flex a bit with heavier riders, for heavy riders get a Marzochii. they are the stiffedct forks around and you wont be dissapointed with it sure it weighs a little more, but so do u.

Manitou rules for shocks. Rock Shox has horrible quality control, i've had nothing but problems with them. Some people have good experiences, but it's like playing the lottery. With $600? I don't think so. Marzocchis are too heavy and the air system they use is sticky. Same with the Whites, they have to work on their damper. Manitous work great, are light, and have lockout which rules.

Manitou has a great selection of light forks and i can't wait until they come out with the black forks. The only problem that i can find with them is that the seals suck. I work at Danville bike and as a retailer of manitou i see a lot of forks being sent back for seal and tpc dampening replacements. I don't know anything about white bros. haven't seen any around here. Marzocchi has real nice hydra coil systems but they are tooo heavy. Same with the air forks. I think the M-arch looks stupid aswell. My favorite choice out of the three that i have mentioned as far as air shocks is the Rockshox sids. They are light as hell and preform pretty well. i just wish there was some way to keep the seals in the danm things. Every five rides the seals like to pop out of my danm things. Personially I want to wait until Manitou comes out with the black but i will still go with the mars elite. Can't ask for a better bargen at $219 check it out online.

Gotta go with the headshok's!! They beat anything out there by far and they weigh a heck of a lot less. My full suspension super v is an x-large and the frame and fork weigh about 7.5lbs together! Most generic forks 3-4 lbs. and with a super light titanium hardtail frame that weighs 3.5 lbs. that's a lot of weight for about $1500 on two pieces of your bike. $1500 for a 6.5lb frame and fork?!?!?! and they say Cannondale is over-priced.....sheeesh!!
WINNER: other
Sure the Zokie weighs a little more, but as far as i'm concerned all the others are always trying to play catch-up with what Marzocchi has already achieved. sure they're a little heavier, but well worth the added heft.

Give up fiddling on your air forks. My Z-2 Atom 80 rides plusher than any other short-travel fork out there, requires little to no maintenance, and looks sweet on any bike(shame on Marzocchi for lying about the travel though). It weighs 3.7 lbs,but you never really feel the extra weight anyway.Coil is the best!

As a bike mechanic I have ridden and actually owned 3 out of the 4 and ripped the guts out of them all and in my opion go with out shock WORST TO BEST
1, White Bors xc4 They have a rep of being indistructuble but the shop I worked at sold 8 of them, 2 to the Owners all of ther had to come back because of a problem with nylon spacers getting deformed making the shock have high pre-load and almost no rebound they wiegh a ton and a half extreanly expensive and I also had to file the body of all disk mounted forks for disk clearence.
2,Rock shox sid sl-I don't like rocksox they will not do work on stock parts even if you pay on shox older than 2 years. second They are only for ultralight expert riders due to the fact that they so filmsy that you can't make mistakes with them or warrenty gess what you also have to pay all!! the shipping and handleing all outher companies will ship back to you for free.
3,Marzocci z2 xfly- the nicest stansions ever gives this fork buttry smooth action this co. has the best sliders in the bisness that where alot of the price is. If your are a bigger guy 200+ you need marzocci they also have the stiffest boddy and probably the least wear indused lateral play but the are a brick in a league of ultra ligths these are a full pound heavier than the sid or mars they also lack the adjustibility of sid or mars.
4, WINNER mars cl There is huge adjustibilty like the grease ports silky travle, light but do not recommend for heavier riders, over sized break arch adds ridigity anti bob there is still bob bit of a gimmic it needs handle bar mount

Get the sid and adjust it to your riding style and your will be flying past the the other guys. Awesopme for a light weight bike such as the SC superlight which mine is on.

SID or Mars, hands down.

marzocchi is flat out the best. i have been burned by rock shox 3 times. they make the most unreliable product.
only drawback with bombers is the weight. i got a 97 z-2 that still rides plush. rode it in mud, rain, snow, ice, dust still good as new. change seals once a year. rock shit and mantitou. they suck.
if you race xcountry ride whatever sponsors you.

Front suspension is probably the most innovative in bicycle evoloution. I've tried a few bikes w/FS, but I chose Cannondales' HeadShok. Like the rotary engine...less moving parts are better and stronger. I did not experience the torsional stress associated with tandem shocks.
