Mark a weekend warrior from Hobart , Tasmania writes:

I was hooked up with Manitou when the mach 5 was out - I ran a modified SX with just on 80mm travel (70mm stock, more like 65mm), and some tweaks with valving, seals, wipers and coil springs replacing the MCU's.
However, I couldn't keep cartridges, top caps or crown and stanchions up to it over about 1 season of DH racing.
I wish I could have gotten the Z2's instead, stiffer, stronger, better action - only downside being the front end sat a bit low with them on, making the bike a bit nervous. 4" travel Z1's graced my ride next and ruled.
I'll give it to the Z2, in hindsight. For the old manitou, I will say they didn't dive as bad under brakes, and were substantially lighter - oh and my tweaked set hauled arse when they were working.

WINNER: Bomber Z2

furry marmot a weekend warrior from Geneva writes:

I have been the proud owner of a Z2 Light (ltd. edition polished silver) since '98. Nothing else comes close to a Bomber as far as performance is concerned: they are ridiculously plush, corner impeccably and soak up everything in their path. I've taken them down most of the best downhills in the Alps (les Gets, Chateau d'Oex, Metabief, Chamonix valley) and can only report positive (generally ecstatic) experiences.

Oh, and on the service front the oil has only been changed once. Nothing else. They're still just as smooth as they were 6 years ago. That's how reliable and durable they are.

I fully recognise that the Z2 is now an "old fork" but nevertheless wish to pay my respects to a legendary piece of engineering which will hopefully continue to serve me well for many years to come.

Rock shox indy s !!! the performance is outstanding , they are not expensive compared to the obvious winner : Bomber's , but they use all the travel they come with (55mm) .why spend 500$ an a shock youll only use half its travel? when you can spend 70$ and get an indy s? for example : brake ; use 3/4 of your travel . ride off a sidewalk curb : use 100% travel...im just using real world riding conditions here "folks"

Nah , if i had the money ide buy a bomber , even the cheapest of the line EXR's , because they are amazing. one day ill upgrade because my indy s (for real) are ready to die .I am scared of that day because they will probably just fall off while im riding...

Bruce Dance a cross-country rider from damp, delightful Blighty writes:

WHOA!.... This is like some weird timewarp....When these forks came out they were just so much better than the shonky elastomer-filled, no-damper rubbish we had before, they were a MUST HAVE upgrade, remember that?

I had some Bombers briefly, but the airspring leaked enough from new that I had to pump them up every day. I soon got very bored of this. They were also rather heavy. They did ride well though. A friend kept his a little bit longer and found the bushings wore out, which was also rather tedious.
I still have a set of Manitou SX-Ti's which are similar to the Mach 5 Ti's, and they are OK; the ride has never been very plush, but the ride suits fast work on less-rugged terrain, or maybe racing. The cartridge damper makes for easy maintenance, but it isn't very well designed, and has given a few problems. The seals were never very good either, but overall, the fork has basically lasted OK with careful maintenance.
I also have a yellow Judy SL. This originally retailed for 599 quid in the UK. Yes, that is right, FIVE HUNDRED and NINETY NINE flippin' quid, ie about 750USD. I would rather have hammered nails through sensitive parts of my anatomy than let my wallet bleed THAT badly. I got mine secondhand, and I've put a lot of miles on them. They were light alright, but that was about it. Over time, I have had to replace EVERY SINGLE PART inside these forks, because it broke or just wore out. When I saw what happened to the originals, I knew I was not going to put identical replacements back inside because the same thing would only happen again. I thought, 'I can design and make parts that will work better and last longer than these' so that is exactly what I did. They now have rising rate springs, an open bath speed-sensitive damper system, and give 90mm of really plush travel, and I no longer have to pig about or fiddle with them in any way. Job's a good'un, finally...

Overall, each of these forks was good in different ways in its day, but in four or five years things have come on so far there is no comparison with the latest top end designs.... I mean, you would walk right past these in the shop to get at the new stuff, even if they were half the cost, right?

Plus ca change, plus le meme chose.....

Just put a Z2 Atom Race (2001, 80mm) on my Moots YBB, and loved the fork immediately. After I put in a "heavy" rated spring in one leg (after experimenting with the new springs in both) I liked it even better, especially from a quality-construction point of view. This fork's guts kicks ass on the innards of my old Manitou Xverts. I had most recently on the Moots a 99 Marzocchi 70mm (65?) Xfly which I loved, more for the stiffness as wasn't too impressed with the spring/plush factor, but coils on the Atom are the s**t. Now I'm looking for a 100mm coil Marzochhi for my Heckler. A buddy has the coil MXR on his Steelman and raves (as of course do most of my friends about their Marzocchi coils, NOW I know what they mean!).

Gotta be the Zocch. I've had a couple of Judy's (a 99 XC and a 00 Race), an old Manitou FS and an 01 SX, and am currently riding an 01 Z3. The Zocch is deffinately the best of all of them. Stiffer, easier to maintain, more reliable, and the most fiddle free fork I've owned. I'll take a Marzocchi any time.

Marizocchi Z1 MCR forks with 5" travel, lockout, and rebound control. Better and wider range of adjustability for rebound control and easier lockout than any other manufacturer. Better stiffness for more precise shock absorbtion and wheel tracking. Smoother travel and better damping than Judy SL. Much better reliability than Rock Shox spotty track record. And the true test...I dropped off a 7 foot ledge onto flat concrete bottoming out my Z1 forks and Fox Float RC rear shock and broke my bike but both fork and rear shock were fine and neither has ever leaked or degraded in performance! The only true way to rate a product is to push it to it's limits in real situations...and these forks have out-performed any other forks I have seen. I have broken 2 different Rock Shox forks on 3 and 4 foot drops, so if these Marizocchis can take double that and still not break, there is no comparison in my mind.

I have an Atom Bomb Z2. It's heavy, it's puke green..and it works like a fork should. Plush travel, very minimal flex. Perfect. I can't speak for the Manitou but the Judy I had before the Z2 was a joke. The damping adjustment didn't work, the travel was anything but smooth(even with Judy butter), and the fork flex was excessive to the point of negatively affecting tracking control over rough trails. That was the 1997 model, and since then I hear the innards are very different, hopefully much better.

You have to be a retard to blow the judy SL cartridge. People who take a 2.9 lb. cross country fork on a 6 foot drop qualify as retards. If you rdie the SL for what it was designed for, it is simply the best. I weigh 230, ride it hard, AND rebuild the cartridge every season as the manual suggests (retards also don't read instructions) and it has NEVER blown, nor has it lost its plushness. Its the lightest, its feel is perfect for cross-country, and its product support is the best bar none. Unlike some of the other manufacturers who like to make "multi-use" forks, Rockshox makes specialized models. The SL is a superb fork if used within its limits. If you want an overweight, schitzo biker-friendly, son of frankenstien fork, the others will do.

Some say it is below Rock Shox, but i have friends who own the SID fork and you have to tune it with a very pain in the ass process, plus after a regular use and less than 3 months using it the shafts got loose and so the rubber seals. It is made just for 1 day riding. With Manitou is different, it is almost 100% manteinance free. Just a matter of marketing.

Sick and tired of going through all this hassle to get my fork back to life I got rid of the SX Ti and replaced it with a Bomber Z2 Light/Atom. Great XC fork: works very well, it's beefy looks give you a feel of confidence, is almost maintenance free, ... and it is European. I'm a Manitou freak.I own a Magnum myself, and everyone I know that owns a Manitou has been happy with them, they have supreme control in the rough over most other forks--don't buy the Mars with the 3-pc. carbon lowers though, because they flex way too much.I love Microlube--why didn't the other guys think of this first?I recommend the Magnum R,SX,SX-R,SX-LT,all X-Verts,and the Mars-1.The new Millenium long-travel fork is a match for any Marzocchi--high praise indeed, but it's REALLY expensive and only 1000 were made.

I have to admit that Marzocchis are kickass forks.Beefy and plush(and made in Italy too!),these forks are a trailrider's godsend. They are a little heavy, but they get the job done.Marzocchi has a model for every budget, and all are good. The only thing I don't like about them is that you have to dissasemble the fork to maintain it--minor issue.

Rock Shox are okay but are overrated, particularly the harsh-riding and high-maintenance SID.The only ones I can recommend are the Judy XC,SL, and 100,the new Psylo, and maybe the Jett Race. But the other 2 manufacturers have it all over these forks.

Skip RST.For the most part these low-end elastomer forks are poor products that are woefully behind the times.Only their more expensive forks are any good, and they're surpassed by the forces of M&M(Manitou and Marzocchi).Avoid Sync and Suntour's crappy stuff at all costs!!
I've heard good stuff about White Bros. forks, but can we say FREAKIN' EXPENSIVE?Cannondale's Headshok and Lefty are good, but you have to get a Cannondale to get them, which means paying out the nose.

Ummm, I own the Z.2 I would have to say that. They have come a long way in 4 years however. The '01 Psylo looks good, as well as the 01 X-vert. On the whole, travel+reliability has gone up while price and weight have come down. My fork leaks via right leg (seal) but it was the best at the time. . .

I would have to say the best shock out of these three would have to be the Judy SL. It hasd the all travel system so you can adjust it to fit whatever riding you do.

Marzocchi hands down, plush reliable italian made goodness! Easily adjustable, and reliable. Great feel, only draw back is they are noisy. The open oil bath is the cause of the noise, and most of the time you can't even hear it. Some people really dislike it, but it works great!

Marzocchi are the best. All bombers are top quality but may be a little expensive. If you spend over a grand on a bike which can be done easy, why not spent more and get some monster T's with 170mm of travel.

DiRT a cross-country rider from USA writes:

Instead of comparing brands (because all of them have a diverse selection of models) I want to compare fork types. I'll limit it to four main types of forks: Telescope (including triple crown long travel), Headshock-single shocks, Linkage forks, the lefty.

Telescope: Advantages include being the standard, true and tested, cheap, upgrade options, and easy to switch out when need a new one. Disadvantages, two shocks (often they have two coils, etc) make it a bit heavier than a fork needs to be, only the expensive versions really work well, two sliders and single crown make for a more noodle ride on lower end (sub $400) forks, internals can get complicated--hence full maintenance requires BA in MEch Engr, tuning spring rates (on non-air) and dampening can be a pain, if no external adjusters present. Summary, a fair design that is so commonly accepted it would *seem* to be the best, but this ain't no popularity contest.

Headshock (C'dale): Advantages include single shock lightness, coolness factor, laterally stiff, could be easier to adjust (given the model that can be adjusted). Disadvantages, hard as hell to take off and put back on yourself, requires special headset, tools, possibly stem and service, and the adjustability/upgrades are hard to get at. Summary, unique shock makes for complex adjust/maintenance--requires PhD in Mech Engr.

Linkage forks (Look, K2 Crosslink): Advantages include, due to single shock and dual crown, laterally stiff, fairly light, fairly inexpensive (for performance you get), external adjustments, easy as hell maintenance. Disadvantages, old versions had j-stroke (not an issue with the latest designs), not for downhilling, not for beginners, pivots points could be damaged (but replaced by owner in 5 minutes for a couple dollars). Summary, easy to maintain, adjustable, cross-country-only fork with a unique appeal that few have figured out.

Lefty (C'dale): Adv, lightweight, fairly stiff, unique and coolness, travel ain't bad. Disadv, not as stiff as dual/triple crown, can only use disc brakes, expensive (right now), about as bad as telescope for stiffness and maintenance (internals). Summary, faddish forks can get pioneers killed or make them trailblazers--wait-n-see.

Total Sum: I prefer the linkage fork after all is tried and tested. It simply works simple.
