DocPaul a weekend warrior from Flagstaff, AZ writes:

I'll break it down into clipless vs. platform. And my verdict is one is not superior to another, they are simply different. You want efficient xc riding, go clipless. You want technical FR/dirt jump riding, go platform. Never the twain shall meet.

Merits of clipless: efficiency efficiency efficiency. The only way you'll get power out of the complete pedal revolution. If you're a xc racer, riding long uphill fire roads, anything that requires long time in the saddle, then clipless is the only way.

Liabilities of clipless: gotta clip out NOW!!! If you gotta bail NOW, then clipless is suicide (no matter how "fast" you think you may be; how many dirtjumpers/FR riders do you see riding clipless???). If you have any need to shift the position of your foot on the pedal, you're outta luck. So much for pedalling on your heels!

Benefits of platform: technique technique technique. The only way to pull off trials/FR moves. Ever tried to manual or pedal hop or j-hop or bunny hop on clipless? HAH! Let's see you try to japslap even a 2 footer on spd's. (if you have no idea what I'm talking about, I rest my case, you clipless sissy). And for those of you who say you can bunny hop on clipless: you're delusional. You're merely "level hopping", not truly bunny hopping. (all you bmx-er's reading this, you know exactly what I mean).

Liabilities of platform: what? you can only use 50% of the pedal stroke? what? you mean you can bust open a shin bone? what? your feet bounce all over the place? what? you get sh*t for riding platforms from all your titianium lycra xc weenie riding buddies? How many xc gold medals have been won on platforms? Hmm? WWTD? (What would Tinker do?)

I vote tie. You like lycra? go clipless. You like full face helmets? go platform. You like both? get two bikes and two sets of pedals.

There are only two pedals that any mountain bike rider would consider (DH aside). I use to only ride Time ATAC, they were the best pedal out there for many years, and are still a close second. But when CBros came out with the Eggbeater, they set the bar higher than the ATAC. The eggbeater lets you clip in on four sides, as opposed to only two with the ATAC pedal. They also retain absolutely none of the trail you are riding on. The eggbeater is also much lighter, you could nearly run two pairs for the weight of one pair of the ATAC pedals. Just think-eight sides that you can attempt to click that cleated shoe into.

I've only ridden with the Time ATAC, but I have to say the ease with which I picked it up (relatively speaking), leads me to believe it's a good product. Function without problems in all conditions (I ride all year regardless of weather)and once you clip in and out a few times it becomes intuitive. Falling sucks but pedaling effeciency and being a better rider more then compensates. Would also consider the Crank Bros. Candy.

I started with clips and straps "back in the day" -> got Shimano M737 when they first came out -> upgraded to M747 when they came out. They've been pretty good but I wore them out a couple of years ago. The latest Shimano SPD pedals are a downgrade to the 747s IMNSHO. After trying out every system I could get my hands on, I settled on Crank Bros. eggbeaters. They are fantastic!

The ultra-lightweight Ti models are crazy-expensive, but the "S" model is very light, very strong and good value for the money.

Good shoes are the other half of the equation: my choice are Carnacs - best fit (for my feet) plus super stiff soles and superb build quality.

PS One person claimed the eggbeaters are the hardest to clip out -- that is completely opposite to my experience...

I currently use the shimano 747, and my only complaint is that they do not evenly adjust. In otherwords, if i adjust on side of the left pedal one way, when i flip it to do the same on the other side, it is completely different. I find myself always adjusting the clip, which is annoying. They are quite heavy also, which is not a good thing obviously for racing. I am looking into puchasing the Time Atac Titan Carbon set new for 2004. I wear SPD's, in general they give a better feel of the bike, and much better acceleration. Though i did snap my elbow off after rotating backwards too much on a jump, this was due to the fact that i couldn't get my feet out. Other than that, on most crashes the feet will come out at lower settings. Flats are good for jumping, you can corner faster, and most people feel more comfortable on flats.

In technical or wet stuff I just could'nt get my feet out fast for the millisecond saves. There isn't always soft ground where you fall over stuck in the clips. I got pretty messed up just falling over on baby head rocks from a standing up position. However, I cannot smirk at those "platform" guys, because on a tight, rocky, uphill singletrack, I found even the ATAC leaving me on the ground still clipped in when I am doing a slow speed climb on a wet root/rock infested single track. I just bought a pair of platforms to ride in the winter, and I have to say, I like them very much. Really great when you hit a patch of ice. My personal conclusion based on what I have tried, is I will use platforms when in a tight rocky singletrack, and Time ATAC when on a longer, faster ride with lots of mud.

OK, depending on what kinda od TIME pedals you are talking about, creates different opinions. The titans and aliums are nice, but the carbon just plane suck! I used them for 3 months of training and by the end there was no pedal left! Dont pland on using them again. I then used some ritchey's, like them a lot. only reason i got rid of them is becasue they broke, minor accident, but ritchey replaced them with some Speedmax pedals...love them the most. After trying my friends shimano 959's, WOW, I LOVE THEM. what a fun pedal., dont plan on using anything else now, and compared to the 959's, TIME pedals blow.

Without a doubt Time ATAC. Easy to get in and out of, mud wont clog them, some lateral play for pedal position. They seem to work even better as you use them. New to mountain biking but avid roadie. On the road I use speedplays. On the road there is no equal. I have not yet tried the frogs on my MB. I am using the shimanos with the SH55 cleat which allows me to exit from a number of different angles which is important to me now since I am just getting started. My views may well change as I become more experienced. I think the problem with frogs and the ATACs is going to be trying to get out in situations where it is difficult to swing my heal out, for example on a steep uphill with lots of pressure on the pedals and stalling out while out of balance.

Then I tried the frogs. Easy in, easy out. I mean really easy out! It take ZERO effort to get out of the Frogs. And they keep you clipped in great! Funny I never see anyone with Times on the trails, but always see SPD's and Frogs.

But besides the mud shedding, the Times have zero adjustment. No popping out of the pedal because the tension isn't set just right! That's worth the price of admission right there. The only thing I'd to improve would be entry - I have no trouble clicking in unless I really need to right then, in which case clicking in is almost impossible. I tried Ritchey - the worked 'good', however when I removed them to clean & lube the threads - the threads stripped. The crank arm was fine - so I hung them on the wall and tried Time ATAC. i loved them - they worked great in all conditions. I wear out cleats fast - the replacements are'nt too expensive and you have adjustability in the exit angle with the cleat mounting.
I race started racing BMX after some time on mountain bikes - I run the Times on my BMX bike and love them there too! I also found out a nice reason to run clipless - my wife was going to loan one of my bikes to a neighbor (13 yr old) and she had it down from its resting place when she realized it had "...thoose funny pedals on it..." so she changed her mind and did not give my race bike the loaner treatment. Man I thought WOW! that was a close call.
Here is the hard truth - do what is right for you. Try what you can afford and experiment. Ride different bikes and try new riding styles. Challenge yourself and you will find new ways of doing the same old grind. Be you - don't react to ratings - just go do it!
As for me? Every crank arm in my shop has knows what Time it is ... and that may have saved thier life!

Damn IT!!! I just wrote two paragraphs comparing each one of these stinking pedals then hit the "minimize" button.. and lost it all! Now i'm too frustrated to rewrite it. Basically.... if you're looking for lightweight, durability, reliability, servicability, made in the usa, superior performing pedals... go with the frogs. Unless you live in B.C. and expect to take 10-15 drops, ditching your bike frequently, and generally enjoy abusing yourself.... then bmx style pedals with lotsa grippy little pegs on them would work better. Also... the composite body of the frogs may not be able to take hard bashes against rocks (although if you can manage to do it without claiming the life of some other part of your bike i'd be impressed) My only complaint is that when it gets extremely cold... ice tends to form... when ice forms... you stomp on the pedal to crack the ice... over time this tends to also crack the composite plastic body of the frogs. Gotta say that the Rockies support Shimano. Nice and dry until mid-winter-riding mud screws up and closes trails. Had Time pedals come into my shop ruined (springs loosened) after one season. Cut my teeth on Ritchey's, but have seen the light. Speedplay good for road and cross. Look at what?

I will fly in the face of convention and vote Ritchey.Mine have held out great in the snowy, muddy shitfield that is the Northeast.Once you break them in(someone said it was like kick-starting a motorcycle, and I agree)they're very good consistent pedals for a fraction of the Times' price.I bought them to replace the shitbox Bontragers that came on my Trek 7000.NEVER,EVER,EVER BUY BONTY RE-1'S AFTERMARKET!!I broke them(yes,BROKE THEM)riding cross-country and I only weigh 160 pounds!
As for downhill racing(the Trek is my fitness/training bike),I gotta vote for platforms. The downhill racing scene around here is super-technical,and for most courses clipless pedals actually slow you down--makes picking around in technical sections A LOT harder.Yeah, there are some courses in which clipless is an advantage, but good pedaling technique makes up the difference. Shinburgers,Zu-zu's,Eastons,Atomics--all work good.Once you learn how to spin just right, you'll never do clipless DH racing again!

Had the 747's, Ok pedal but not enough float and was tough on the knees, bought the Looks, lots of friction. Switched to Frogs, hated them for the first three rides got used to them by the fifth and loved thm on the sixth. Great float, easy out and two seconds or less to clean.

TIME ATAC for sure. Shimanos are to fragil and I've broken a pair on the inevitable slam against a rock. My ATAC seem almost bullet proof. They take incredible bumps against rocks and show no loss in performance.

Time ATAC hands down....

What's up with all of the XC-knocking downhillers on this site??? Downhilling is a hell of a rush, but it doesn't make you anymore of a man just because you CLAIM to be a die-hard downhill rider! You have to work both you're downhill and XC skills are both important unless you through your bike in the back of a truck everytime you have to climb a mountain. Get a life, and turn the testosterone down a couple of notches...

used Ritchey pedals for years, pretty happy except in extreme mud. Switched to time aluminum. A little trouble getting out at first, takes some breaking in time, very secure. Easy in and snugg with good float.

I have owned both Shimano and Ritchey and Speedplay pedals. The Shimano pedals were great for the 2 years I rode them. Ritcheys were shit. Hard to get into and released way to easy. The Speedplays are the best. Easy entry and they never release when I don't want them to. They also have the most foat so they are easy on the knees. Kinda pricy though.

The SpeedPlay Frogs are great pedals. Secure latching, yet easy clean float. Super light, yet hold up YEARS under my 200+ lbs (steel axles) and are easy to lube with the greaseport. I tore mine apart (easy) after 6 years, just to see how the bearings were--totally fine. The greaseports and purge system works great. Cleats are EXPENSIVE, but last a long time.

well, frankly i've never used these things... just classic metal peddles. If i caught my self paying 150 bucks for some peddles i'd have to kick my self in the ass. Plus special shoes you're up to about 220 depending on the quality. I could upgrade my whole drive train for that much, plus get some better rims and a better hub! But if you've won the lotto like some dude here, awesome... but if i won the lotto, i'd be riding a dirt bike, not a mt bike.
