$170.00 | | Purchased At: | Price Point | | Strengths: | Inexpensive, well padded, well ventilated, good coverage | | Weaknesses: | I'd like to see some longer forearm coverage, shoulder pad adjustment straps come loose and need to be pulled tight from time to time, split chest protector kind of worries me but so far no problems, you have to wear something under it. | | Similar Products Used: | None | | Bike Setup: | IronHorse Sunday Team | | Bottom Line: | This is my first armor jacket. I've taken a couple of smaller spills, one of which was in a rock garden. Any time I've eaten it I barely felt anything so I know its doing its job. Its much cheaper than a Daniese but probably not as comfortable but just buy an UnderArmor sleeveless impact shirt and you won't even notice it. The padding feels like you can really wack yourself pretty good and still be fine. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

After you get the straps set up you don't have to do much adjusting. I was also surprised that it is not very hot. I don't even notice wearing it while i am riding. $119.00 | | Purchased At: | ebay | | Strengths: | Versatile: can be used as a Vest, full jacket, or just elbow guards. Removable spine section. Protection well placed and where you need it most. I like the fact that the jacket comes all the way down to the waist line not mid torso like the 661 Pro Pressure Suit. Two piece chest protector doesn't "choke" you out like some breast plate designs (IE 661 Pro Suit) | | Weaknesses: | odd fitting, bulky. Forearm guards are rigid and don't flex well with your elbow. Adjustment straps are wide and elastic and overkill. A nice velcro quick adjustment setup would be better. | | Similar Products Used: | sixsixone Pro Pressure Suit (highly recommended BTW) it's more flexible than the Flak Jacket but has issues of it's own too. | | Bike Setup: | Transition Bottle Rocket | | Bottom Line: | I'm giving this a 5 for value because I got a smokin deal on ebay- paid 120 shipped.
Overall cons; this body armor is bulky and difficult to adjust. Forearm guards are not as flexible as it could be, very rigid so as you bend your arm the pad opens up pulling away from your arm, exposing your forearm underneath. Size is sort of odd. I got the S/M and weigh 175, chest size is right in there for a S/M but it still tight throughout the mid section. I'm not fat but I'm not BruceLee either, this fits well up top and around the shoulders but the kidney strap is short and tight to zip up. So if you've got any kind of "gut" be sure to get a Large and cinch up all the adjustment straps.
Overall pros are; it doesn't really matter, once it's adjusted don't mess with it, crash once and it will be the best investment ever.
For a weekend warrior or someone that visits Whistler a few times a year, I'd recommend the 661 Pro Suit. If your hard core or a DH racer this suit is great. It's almost a light Motocross suit- so that should tell you the level the suit is built at. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

She just started MTB and though very athletic and a quick learner she was still getting pretty bruised up on the learning curve. I bought her the jacket and knee/shin guards and was so impressed with the fit and quality I purchased some arm and shorty knee guards for myself. $183.00 | | Purchased At: | Rockgardn.com | | Strengths: | Everything...form-fitting, breathable (open mesh), burly hard plastic guards. The removable elbow pads are awesome because you can use other guards in their place. Tough stitching that stays together. This thing is the most comfortable and most protective upper suit I've worn and is 100% worth every penny. | | Weaknesses: | None. | | Similar Products Used: | 661, Fox roost guard | | Bottom Line: | Don't hesitate to buy this if you need upper body protection...honestly don't even consider anything else. Roost guards are useless, 661 suits are awful and Dainese is too expensive. This suit betters all of the above and at a reasonable price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$169.00 | | Purchased At: | Ride this | | Strengths: | Lots of protection, mesh is cooler, replaceable arms, everything stays in place well when riding. Longer than the 1st generation which is nice. | | Weaknesses: | After first day using with no crashes noticed stitching coming apart on one arm guard, mesh is coming apart on other arm guard. Arm guards are really tight although rest of the jacket fits well. Maybe I need XL arms with L jacket. Definately needs to be worn over top of a shirt, unlike the old one, never had chafed nipples like that before! | | Similar Products Used: | Original RockGardn Flak Jacket, so far, I like many aspects of it better than the new version - other than the heat and how the arms stay in place. | | Bike Setup: | Nomad | | Bottom Line: | A good jacket, not a great one. Could use lycra over nips, difficult to put jacket on with arm guards attached, so far not durable - will really find out after crashing it first time. I'm giving it 3 chilies because it is good and worth the money, for a 3rd generation is should be better and I have previously been impressed with Rockgardn stuff. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

The 2006 flack jacket is by far the most comfortable full protection armor I have worn. Rockgardn used soft, breathable mesh this year which is great for hot Cali summers. This is not the lightest armor, but the fit and mobility cancel any minor weight penalty. Also, this jacket offers pretty much the most protection you can buy, and I bet it will last, judging by the tough stitching and quality zippers. | | Weaknesses: | Not sure yet. I waited until I visited my bro out in USA to purchase one as at the time they were unable to sell them in Britain, something to do with the safety standards over here. This to me is quite concerning due to the Flack Jacket being about the most robust armour around!!! I was concerned about being too hot in the jacket but was quite suprised how cool it can be, you obviously get hot if you wear it on a climb but hey, think of the extra beer calories you are earning. For the money I don't think you can buy better. Bottom line: Tough, robust, comfortable, cool, styling and price. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

After the first couple of rides I stopped even noticing I was wearing it. Good impact protection and pads in all the right places. Pretty packable. if you take the arm pads off you can strap it to your camelbak for the climbs. | | Weaknesses: | hmmm, i'm grasping here but the bottom of the spine protector makes my Fox 360 shorts sag down too much. I have to keep pulling them up. | | Similar Products Used: | tried on 661 and dainese in the stores | | Bike Setup: | freeride/dh. Some climbs some chairlifts. | | Bottom Line: | My first chest/upper body armor and I am very pleased. no chafing, and the pads stay put when you crash. $180.00 | | Purchased At: | cbo | | Strengths: | Firstly this is the 2004 model. I have had lots of fast crashes in this jacket over the last year and I am completely amazed that it is still in perfect working order. Fits me like a glove.
| | Weaknesses: | Probably only that the pading could be thicker, I`ve nailed my elbow once and it still hurt like hell even though the pad didn`t slide out of place. It`s the knee gaurds that I have fit problems with, but that`s another story. | | Similar Products Used: | Leather jacket, it sucked. | | Bike Setup: | Yeti 575 | | Bottom Line: | It looks much cooler now than when it was all new and shiny because of all the knarly scratches!
Fantastic product, anything that has not broken after what I`ve done to it must be good.
Comfortable and flexible.
I also use it with my Dirtsurfer and it works just as well for other than mtb activities.
Probably would recomend "try before you buy" due to some of the fit issues mentioned by other reviewers. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$183.00 | | Purchased At: | Rockgardn.com | | Strengths: | Incredible price, Excellent fit, Adjustability, Styling. The most bang for your buck hands down. | | Weaknesses: | Truly I can't think of any, there were a few minor issues with the old jacket but the new one pretty much addressed all of them and is basically perfect. | | Similar Products Used: | EVS, Azonic, 661 | | Bike Setup: | n/a (what's my bike got to do with it?) | | Bottom Line: | There is a reason this jacket was voted best on MTBR last year and it will be again this year, it has the most features available for this price range and even really has the features of Dainese for about 1/2 the price! This jacket is light, breathable, durable and very well designed. Although it may look similar at a glance to some other jackets on the market there are actually many details that make the Flak Jacket stand out. I spoke to Mark, the owner of Rockgardn at length on the phone about these features and he pointed out to me many things I hadn't noticed but was glad to know about. For example the base material is different than the other jacket on the market that is most similar and much more comfortable against the skin, also the foam padding used under the plastic panels has fewer holes so it is more dense and therefore more protective. Not to mention the arms are removable so you can replace them if needed or just take them off for hot days. The list goes on but most importantly this jacket is solid! I have taken some serious spills and walked away w/o a scratch even at high speeds. For those who complain of a lack of collar bone protection or sternum protection, there is no good way to protect bones. If you were to have guards to protect these areas you would not be able to move or ride a bike at all. Customer service is also top notch and Rockgardn is open to suggestions about improving their product as evidenced by their awesome new redesigned 2005 Flak jacket! | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$183.00 | | Purchased At: | Rockgardn | | Strengths: | A "pretty good" jacket, especially when considering the price. It offers excellent back protection, pretty good chest protection, and reasonable shoulder protection. | | Weaknesses: | The arms fit very poorly, and like their knee/shin guards, the elbow cups seem to easily slide to the side, leaving me with an uneasy feeling about how well my joints will be protected in the event of a slide or sideways crash. There is only one strap on the forearm to help hold this in place, and the arms seemed to be twisted up a lot to get the cups in place.
Also, the straps for adjusting the jacket don't do a lot because the velcro section is short and the straps will be sticking out too far in the air if you try to tension them.
The chest protection is good, but it does leave your sternum exposed, as the pads are on the left and ride sides of a central zipper. I could see hitting a rock wrong and wishing it was a full shield.
Most of the pads on this vest seem to be of medium quality, and they are not shaped as ergonomically as those on more expensive products. | | Similar Products Used: | Dainese | | Bike Setup: | Yeti 575 | | Bottom Line: | I sent this item back, as some of the fit issues made me a bit insecure about how well it would perform. Because it is a safety item, I feel everything needs to be top notch. I've gone with the more expensive Dainese instead, as their products address all of my concerns listed above.
I think the Rockgardn product is an inexpensive way to give yourself a pretty good degree of protection, but it is far from perfect and is clearly from a new company. The build quality could be a bit better even at $180.
Also, the customer service was okay, but it was not as stellar as what other reviewers have said. My refund took a long time. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$180.00 | | Purchased At: | Rockgardn online | | Strengths: | Looks great and protects even better. | | Weaknesses: | The waist area sometimes came up but maybe that's just my body type. Nothing serious though. | | Bike Setup: | Stock 04 Stinky, C'Dale Jekyll 2000 | | Bottom Line: | Great protection and fit. I forgot that I had it on until I took a spill. It makes you feel invincible. After a big spill, I just got up and kept going. It got a bit hot but nothing serious. All the pads stayed where they were supposed to. If you're in the market for upper body protection, the Flak Jacket is it. Looks cool and pretty much bullet proof as the name implies. Rockgardn also has great customer service.
Also, the little pocket thingy on the waste strap was really handy for my $$ and keys. Great buy and I would recommend it to anyone who's serious about minimizing bodily injury. | Value Rating: Overall Rating: |

$150.00 | | Strengths: | Not too heavy, looks great, very comfortable and breathes pretty well!! Plenty of protection for all of the stupid/fun stuff we love to do on our bikes. | | Weaknesses: | There are only two things I can think of:
Elbow/forearm pads only have one strap, which I feel there should be two (althought they don't slide around!).
Lastly, the kidney belt moves around just a bit. Should be a velcro strip on the jacket that connects to the kidnet belt to prevent it from sliding up, or down. | | Similar Products Used: | NONE!!! This is the best jacket!! | | Bike Setup: | '04 Yeti ASX with all the GOOD STUFF!!! | | Bottom Line: | Like I said, this is the BEST JACKET OUT THERE!! Also I tried the 661 2004 version and let me tell you this is much much better. the 661 had some weird fit issues (left arm pads twisted to the side of arm instead of behind arm and the right arm pads were up higher) this made me lose alot of respect I once had for this company, now they have acknowledged the wierd fit so time will tell but still the material is not as nice. The Rockgardn just fits sooo good I can't discribe it, you will just have to try it for yourself.
If you are interested in armor suits this is the one to get and if you are a medium please help my friend out and buy his, he got a medium with another friend of mine and it turned out not to fit him so it has not been used, after trying my small on him it seems this is what he should have got. So if you like what others have said and you are a medium he is selling his brand new for 150.00 or best offer. So help him and youself out and get his at a discount so he can get a small.

Just needed to restitch the straps a little, NOT a big deal. | | Similar Products Used: | 661 pressure suit, azonic body vest | | Bike Setup: | 2002 cortina joyride/shiver sc/xtr,xt components/king etc.. 2002 intense M1, arrow DHX,hope wheels/hayes/shiver DC | | Bottom Line: | I got these right before christmas 2002. I also got a full face helmet which helped a ton with confidence as our trails are not forgiving if you fall. After riding around with just arm pads and falling a few good times this jacket was a must. I knew Rockgardn was a new company but their stuff must be made in the same 661 factory because their product line looks identical. It is still great stuff though. I've fallen frontwards, on my back, side etc...and this has made getting up much easier. It saved my ribs more than once too from the bars hitting them. Fit wise it is on. I had to get a XL I think and it fits nice and snug. IF I lost 10-25lbs it would still fit but I don't think I'd want to go beyond that range.
